There are many types of contagious infections that can be transmitted in different ways, however, there are a number of strategies to prevent or control the spread of any contagious illness or infection.
Although doing routine practices will reduce the likelihood/prevent infection, there are some factors that are beyond our control. Nevertheless, it is important to be educated and assimilate these practices into our daily activities to protect yourself and others from contagious infection.
Hand washing is the primary way of preventing infection at all cost. Very simple yet it is powerful, like a vaccine. Our hand is the first point of contact of everything we touch, therefore hand washing is our first defence against infection. It is important to remember when to wash your hands, especially before and after eating, preparing of food, and using the bathroom.
Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Dispose all used paper or tissue immediately. Wash and sanitize your hands. When sneezing or coughing, there is a high probability of small particles that may released in the air that other people can inhale.
Do not share personal objects such as toothbrushes or handkerchiefs. They can carry harmful organisms that can lead to illnesses that are transmitted via direct contact. Sharing your personal use items puts you and others at risk in acquiring these bacteria or virus. Direct contact may also include shaking hands or hugging.
Having the vaccine is a protection against these infections. Vaccines protects you from contracting the illness, ultimately preventing the illness from spreading.
When you are sick, stay home. If have symptoms such as fever, cough, and/or colds, avoid going to crowded and closed places, to contain whatever virus you may have. Skip school or work if you have symptoms, to protect others from spreading a possible viral infection.
Call your doctor for advice and seek medical attention. Immediate intervention is important for better health outcome.
If you travelled outside the country, it is good to plan to rest for a day or two at home after exhausting travel or vacation. At the same time take this time to self quarantine yourself at home as well.
At this time of outbreak, it is important to protect yourself from acquiring the virus thus protecting others.
