Four Reasons You Need Respite Care
— November 28th, 2018
If you haven’t already made respite care a priority, you might not realize all the reasons why that should change. Respite care is a huge part of making sure that you’re able to continue being a caregiver for as long as possible. By taking some time to evaluate what it can do for you, you’ll be able to get the right fit for you.
You’re a Person as Well as a Caregiver
It’s easy to forget when you’re wrapped up in caregiving that you’re a person, too. When you’re meeting your senior’s needs and doing for her, that’s taking up time and energy that you would normally devote to your own interests. That gets draining after a while and you might not notice for a while.
You Have Other Responsibilities
Besides yourself and your aging adult, you have other responsibilities in your life. You may have a job, other family members, and even pets that all rely on you. That means that you’re dividing your time and your energy amongst a variety of different demands. You do need to be able to focus just on you at some point and that’s tough to do when everyone wants a piece of your attention.
Caregiving Can Wear You Down
Just the act of being there for your senior as much as you are can wear you down. You want to be there for her, but that doesn’t mean that the situation doesn’t get exhausting. It’s tough to see your senior needing more help, especially if she’s always been self-sufficient. Between the physical demands and the emotional impact, you’re dealing with a lot.
You and Your Senior Both Benefit from Time Away
No matter how much you and your senior care about each other, you do still need to have time away from each other now and again. Spending so much time with another person can get grating and you might start to accidentally irritate each other. Having elder care providers taking over for a little while gives each of you some space that you badly need now and again.
Once you experience respite carefully, you’ll have a better understanding of its importance for you as a caregiver. Even if you don’t see those benefits on the first instance, don’t give up. You need more than a couple of hours away in order to get the most out of your time off from caregiving.
